Part of my New Year's Resolution is to actually have a fully completed army. This means painted and fluffed, with plenty of conversions and awesomeness. As of right now, I have a 10,000+ points Guard army which I'm probably never gonna field again, because I got tired of horde armies, a small half-assed Inquisition army, and my main army of Pre-Heresy Alpha Legion. I've narrowed it down to two possibilities:

Chaos Marines: The core of the army will be Alpha Legion pirates, led by "Alpharius". The rest of the army will be a bunch of random Marines, using a bunch of Loyalist bitz. Possible to field this using the Space Wolves codex, and field a bunch of captured tanks like Redeemers and Whirlwinds.

Black Templars: Rather than play them using the actual BT codex, I'd play them as Ultramarines codex. I'm giving up Rites of Battle for Sternguard, essentially. Some would argue the strict wargear options (no ccw's) of the Ultramarines don't fit the BT fluff, but that's what Vanguard, Assault marines, and Command squads are for. Besides, I like my Whirlwinds and Devastators, and BT misses out on those. The Emperor's Champion is also easily fielded, a Captain with a relic blade, and artificer armor, not the same rules, but it will work.

Not sure which I'll do, but I'm leaning slightly towards Chaos at the moment.

I'd vote Chaos. The modeling and painting options are more fun there.

If you did decide to go with BT's, I would suggest sticking with the actual BT 'dex. It's supposed to be inferior to the Marine 'dex, and in some ways it is, but it's more fun to win with a outdated codex.

After much dwelling on the subject, I'm 99% positive that it will be Chaos, using the SWolf codex. As for Thunderwolves, I'm thinking those nice little Bloodcrusher models...

Bloodcrushers will work nicely for a Thunderwolf stand-in. It's a shame though that the chaos codex is so crappy that we have to go to loyalist books to make a good army. I'd love to go back and do justice to my beloved Noise marines...

Good luck on completing the army. Post lots of pics. I wish I could finish painting something. My Gamers A.D.D. just won't allow it.

One of my resolutions is to finish building my 100+ space marines and 9+ vehicles. Conversion heavy. Now to decide on a paint scheme.
